near the sun temple

long shadows heading home

From Cusco we travel by bus to the Sacred Valley to visit the Sun Temple. It's been a long day and I'm fatigued and really feeling the altitude. A little girl leads me by the hand from the bus, across the vacant market area, to the public toilets. When I arrive, breathless, a woman is sitting outside asking for 1 Soles to go in. I just wave my hand weakly and continue inside. Afterwards, I sit and watch the villagers coming home from their terraced plots and pastures, carrying hoes and herding sheep and cows. They are all smiling, and I manage a faint smile in return.
